General description
CD138 is a transmembrane proteoglycan, bearing heparin sulphates and sometimes chondriotin sulfates. It consists of a 30.5 kDa core protein with 5 putative glycosaminoglycans attachment sites. CD138 is a member of the syndecan family. The reported Mr of CD138 ranges from 85,000 to 92,000, presumably depending on the glycosaminoglycan pattern of the molecule (Wijdenes, 1997). Within the hematopoietic system, CD138 is mainly confined to late stages of B-cell differentiation. It is typically expressed at high cellular density in plasma cells (Gattei, 1999). In mature tissues, CD138 is expressed by simple and stratified epithelia, fibroblasts, stratified keratinocytes and endothelial cells (Wijdenes, 1997). Anti-CD138, MI15, was included in the Sixth International Workshop and Conference on Human Leucocytes Differentiation Antigens, and studies by a number of different laboratories confirmed its reactivity with CD138 (Wijdenes, 1997).
